What Is FUE?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the most widely performed hair transplant technique worldwide. Individual follicular units (1–4 hairs each) are extracted from the donor area using a tiny circular punch tool, then implanted into recipient channels that were created separately.

FUE's main advantage is versatility — it works for everything from small hairline touch-ups to mega-sessions of 5,000+ grafts. It's offered at virtually every reputable clinic globally and has the longest track record of consistent results.

What Is DHI?

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) is a refinement of FUE where the extraction is the same, but the implantation step uses a specialized tool called a Choi Implanter Pen. This pen loads a single graft and simultaneously creates the channel and places the graft in one motion.

DHI's precision makes it excellent for creating very natural hairlines and for adding density between existing hairs without damaging them. The trade-off is that it's slower, meaning fewer grafts can be placed per session.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose FUE if:

You need a large number of grafts (3,000+), have advanced hair loss (Norwood 4–7), want the most cost-effective option, or are traveling abroad for the procedure and want everything done in one session.

Choose DHI if:

You need precise hairline work, want to add density to areas that still have some hair, prefer a no-shave approach, or are at an earlier stage of loss (Norwood 2–3) where precision matters more than volume.

Consider Both (Hybrid):

Many top clinics now offer hybrid procedures — DHI for the hairline where precision is critical, and FUE for the rest of the scalp where volume and speed matter more. This "best of both worlds" approach is increasingly popular.

Does Technique Affect Results?

The surgeon's skill matters more than the technique. A great surgeon using FUE will outperform an average surgeon using DHI every time. Focus on finding an experienced surgeon with a strong portfolio of before/after results for cases similar to yours.
